ACT’s flocculant, “Suimu”, is used to treat wastewater easily and economically. Suimu can reduce processing costs compared with cases where the treatment of all wastewater is outsourced to industrial waste disposal companies because it is difficult to treat in-house. In contrast with conventional flocculants, sediment formed after treatment is superior in terms of dehydrating properties, reaction rates and ease of adjusting pH levels. In addition, the composition contents are safe with natural minerals and the main components and waste water after treatment are eco-friendly. The product itself and the treated wastewater are both environmentally friendly. The Waterworks Bureau of Kawasaki City is promoting eco-friendly business operations. In order to reduce the amount of plastic waste, we have eliminated the outer bag to create simple packaging that can be fastened using recycled paper. To improve usability, we have added a safety grip at the bottom of the bag to prevent occupational accidents caused by sharp objects, such as glass fragments, when garbage is collected. The production history is printed on each bag and a tracking video system (24-hour recording with 5-year storage) is available to provide an accurate picture of times that quality defects occur.

Wako Sangyo’s first aid kit is a set that includes a coagulant that solidifies vomit, consumables, such as paper towels used for cleanup, and shoe covers to prevent infection. Coagulating, sanitizing and deodorizing vomit quickly helps speed up cleanup and reduces the risk of infection. The main raw materials in the coagulant are water absorbent resin made from recycled waste liquid from floor cleaning wax (previously treated and disposed of as industrial waste), sawdust and rice bran. Our regenerative fuel production machine, ecoks, is an energy-saving device that continuously inputs plastic waste as raw materials and thermally decomposes it at low temperatures. The recycled fuel manufactured, ecoks%reg; is a solid fuel that has been registered as a type 4 solid fuel and has oil-based high calorific value with charcoal-based sustainability, but unlike ordinary solid fuel, there are hardly any cinders left over after combustion. When it is transported to other prefectures, it can be transported as fuel, not industrial waste. Kureha Ecology Management strives to protect the environment through the provision of comprehensive engineering services for industrial waste collection/transportation and intermediate treatment , as well as environmental equipment and facilities. An incineration facility in Kawasaki City detoxifies and treats PFOS (substances that do not decompose easily) and medical waste, and produces power using waste heat generated through the process of incinerating waste, which contributes to energy supply. The Kawasaki Logistics Center, which is attached to this facility, mainly handles the trans-shipment and storage of waste with low concentrations of PCB and infectious waste.
We are playing a part in the creation of a recycling-oriented society as a recycling industry in the “Manufacturing City of Kawasaki” by properly disposing diversified waste.

Since its foundation in 1954, the Japan Environmental Sanitation Center has developed technology in both Japan and overseas as a pioneer responsible for sanitation and the environment developed upon the pillars of technical support for administrative measures related to sanitation in daily life and environmental problems, support for the development of human resources, and dissemination of information and awareness programs for the public. JESC is engaged in providing support for various programs for a number of clients, including the national and local governments, businesses and NPOs in line with the administrative measures of each age, such as securing sanitation aiming at a life without mosquitoes and flies, pollution control measures for high growth, sustainable development and the formation of a recycling society.
Mishimax, an organic waste treatment system, reduces the volume of wastewater sludge, food waste, and other forms of organic waste by more than 90% in 24 hours. Mishimax keeps on reducing organic waste on site for 6 months and contributes to reduce costs for waste treatment.
As transportation and incineration of organic wastes are not necessary, Mishimax’s on-site treatment effectively reduces CO2 emissions and improves recycling rate. In 2017, Mishimax was designated as a “Low CO2 Kawasaki Brand” by Kawasaki City municipal government. Moreover, we would like to promote the diffusion of this technology in Japan and abroad.
The IoT Council of Waste Management and Recycling was the first organization in Japan established for the objectives of reviewing IoT adoption policies in the fields of waste treatment and recycling, making policy recommendations to the government, and creating new businesses, based on the premise of industry-government-academia collaboration. We conduct reviews through the activities of working groups that involve experts, local governments, IT corporations, manufacturers, and waste disposal businesses. By popularizing IoT technology and the associated new business models, we aim to solve problems in the waste disposal and recycling business sectors.

Finetech carries out research and development on nanotechnology and environmental technologies to create a sustainable low-carbon society. Fintech operates under three pillars: (1) environment and energy, (2) development of new green materials, and (3) control technologies. We are focusing on expanding overseas especially in the field of environmental technology with our “trash bag breaking and sorting machine” and “powder dryer” developed using AI/IoT as we aim to build a sustainable society with zero waste by utilizing unused waste as a resource.
Waste glass, bottles and glass bottle residues that are particularly difficult to recycle have traditionally been disposed of as trash. After processing at a plant exhausting residues to ensure environmental safety, they are re-marketed as Crystal Stone Sand.
Particle size can be adjusted and edgeless processing can also be used, removing risks and ensuring safety.
Contribution to the Local Environment
In 1997, Kawasaki City drew up the Kawasaki Eco-Town Plan to create a model town along the entire coastal area of Kawasaki (about 2,800 hectares), where the environment and industry would exist in harmony. We are spending a large amount of time in enclosed-space environment, such as subway and office building. The subway system is a typical enclosed space and the attendant concerns about contaminated air.
However, no systematic investigations on the air quality in subways have been carried out. This project aims to visualize and reduce the particulate matter-derived risks to facilitate “subways with the world's cleanest air”. Our investigation has been introduced by TV and newspapers many times.
What actions are being taken by companies to prevent global warming and reduce CO2 emissions? Carbon offset is an earth-friendly approach that can be easily taken by anyone.
We will introduce systems to create J-Credit schemes with a focus on carbon offset using J-Credit. The J-Credit Scheme is a system where the amount of CO2 emissions reduced through the installation of energy-efficient equipment and the use of renewable energy, as well as the amount of CO2 absorbed through appropriate forest management are recognized by the national government as “credits”.

Daiyu Freeze has developed a technique using liquid nitrogen to repair, replace and rehabilitate water pipes without cutting off water supply.
Daiyu Freeze is a company that replaces underground water pipes, constructs piping equipment for facilities and factories, and installs water supply and drainage pipes for apartment buildings. Daiyu Freeze has established a freezing technique where water supply continues uninterrupted using liquid nitrogen that allows pipes to be laid quickly even in places where water cannot be shut off for long periods of time, such as facilities and hospitals that operate 24 hours a day and large apartment buildings that are difficult to drain or fill with water. The advantage of this method is that it can be used even in situations where there are construction sites that require urgent attention or numerous construction parts because liquid nitrogen can be used to freeze the inside of the pipe from the outside using a special container. Daiyu Freeze has a number of successful examples with underground water pipes in busy quarters downtown and densely concentrated metropolitan areas.

Kawasaki Biomass Electric Power is an eco-friendly, biomass-fired power generation facility that uses only woody biomass fuel with no fossil fuels such as oil and coal to supply “CO2-free electric power”. Here, a year of electric power can be generated for 38,000 ordinary households, which reduces CO2 emissions by about 120,000 tons per year. It is an urban biomass power plant equipped with environmental facilities and equipment, such as flue gas desulfurization equipment and flue gas denitration equipment that are not available at local biomass power plants, in order to meet the strict environmental standards in Kawasaki City. We promote the local production of energy for local consumption and are actively engaged in resource recycling by making effective use of construction waste chips as the main fuel and food residue biomass as secondary fuel.
DAIWA TECH’s groundbreaking “geothermal storage floor heating system” makes the most of renewable geothermal energy. DAIWA TECH developed this system considering the importance of using renewable energy heat more effectively because the demand for heat in heating and cooling is quite high in the energy consumption mix. More energy can be saved by using heat storage materials under floors that do not allow heat to escape once warmed. The system heats the entire floor from the entranceway to the living room. Natural energy and heat storage materials have been combined to create an optimal heating system that is warm and clean with low-running costs 24 hours a day.
Challenergy’s “Magnus × Vertical Axis, Next Generation Wind Turbine” uses the Magnus Effect, a force generated when rotating cylinders are used in place of general propellers in an airstream and the wind power generator rotates on the vertical axis, making it possible to generate power in a stable way even with strong winds and turbulence as seen in typhoons. In addition, wind power generators that rotate at low speeds can reduce the impact on the surrounding environment, such as noise and bird strikes. With these features, Challenergy’s wind turbines can be used even in areas where it is difficult to install wind power generators. Kansai Electronics has developed a machine capable of the mass production of nanofibers, a cutting-edge material through a melting process (patented in 2017) using the know-how and manufacturing technology for radiation measurement instruments and physical and chemical appliances that the company has developed since it was first founded. Kansai Electronics' nanofiber melt spinning machine can mass-produce as much as 6kg of around 500-nm of fibers (1nm is 1 billionth of a meter) per hour. The types of fibers that can be produced as nanofibers include typical chemicals, such as polypropylene (PP), polyester (PEs) and polyethylene (PE), biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) and other composite materials. These can be produced in flocculating or sheet-like shapes, depending on its application.

- 1)“Floating sorbent” is a material that that can easily and quickly recover oil to deal with oil pollution in the ocean and rivers. It continues to float after oil is adsorbed, forming clumps that make it easier to remove.
- 2)“Purifiers” are materials that can decompose and remove harmful organic substances (phenol, agricultural chemicals, etc.) in water, air and soil. Purifiers retain a high level of decomposition activity even in environments without light, which allow it to efficiently decompose and remove harmful organic substances.

The Advanced Plant Factory Research Center was built using subsidies provided through the Subsidy Project for Advanced Plant Factory Research Facility Development sponsored by the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry.
